Family farm
Hungary
I am the only farmer in Budapest who has a large garden that has been accepted as an organic farm by the management of WWOOF. I have been a member of WWOOF for 15 years, I paused my membership for a few years due to the Covid disease.
I have lived in a Bauhaus-style villa since I was born, only 15 minutes from the city center by public transport.
It was my luck that a 60 x 60 meter piece of Earth was entrusted to me, only to me, and I feel it is my duty to preserve this garden as I saw it in my childhood more than 70 years ago, when there were hardly any houses in the area, only free nature in some places an orchard. An old uncle lived next door, whose goats provided milk. Unfortunately, this is unimaginable today, all my neighbors have built big houses with garages and driveways. In my garden, there are only big trees (more than 70, four of which are more than 120 years old), but I also grow tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins, melons and vegetables on the roof. Mushrooms grow in the garden in autumn, which prove that the real wild nature still reigns here (boletus, pine mushroom). I don't keep animals because I live alone and having them wouldn't allow me to move freely outside my house. Many kinds of birds live in the garden, in the company of squirrels, nymphs, and hedgehogs.
The huge trees ensure that a lot of compost is produced and this always renews the soil in my garden. Unfortunately, it rains less and less, so I am collecting rainwater more and more. I like, nature, culture, science, arts and public life; creative thinking in general. I gladly offer any support in getting to know Budapest and Hungary. I am not a vegetarian, but try to have a diet without much meat. I don't allow smoking inside the house, but of course outside it is acceptable; all drugs are prohibited in Hungary. I enjoy alcohol moderately. I provide wwofers with their own self-contained rooms with bathroom and toilet, where my children used to live before they'd left home. I have visited all the countries of Europe and have traveled extensively to other continents. A livable environment in harmony with nature is very important in my opinion. I hope to organize the wwoofers' work schedules with individual agreement depending on the tasks in hand. I'm glad you to welcome you here from beginning of April to End of November. As I value creativity, some artistic ability is an advantage. I have no preferences as to the age or the sex of the volunteers. Because I live not far away from the citycenter, you can enjoy the rich cultural life of Budapest every day after your daily work.

We stayed 15 days in Mihály’s house in Buda. Mihály was a very caring host. Communication was easy and we had many different conversations.
His house is very comfortable (with a private bedroom and bathroom), and the garden is beautiful.
The work was never very hard; Mihály is flexible and adapts to the woofers. We were able to visit the capital during our stay, especially on our free weekend and in the evenings after work.
We hope the next woofers will take good care of his lovely garden.
Thank you for everything and see you soon Mihály (We have a chess game to play).

Mihaly was a good host, he has amazing stories and makes amazing food.
When I arrived, I was unable to get in contact with Mihaly and had to trespass onto the property as Gabriel did. I did have to leave early due to a family emergency, but my time with Mihaly was great. I would recommend creating a clear work schedule ahead of time.

I completely agree with the comment of Gabriel, I run away from the place, too many things not coherent with the Wwoof Chart

Mihály never mentioned a work arrangement of 6 hours per day for five days on, with one day off. (Only once I arrived, when it was too late to say no.)
When I arrived, my European cell plan no longer worked; I could not call Mihály nor could I get a response from ringing the bell. I did manage to find a gate that I could use to trespass onto the property and I eventually made contact.
Very nice house and garden. The work is not too demanding. Mihály provided some basic garden tools for some weeding in the strawberries. When I struggled to get the job done fast enough, Mihály was concerned about our work arrangement being met and I promptly cancelled with him any further engagements.
The bed was not comfortable with being only a few inches thick foam, and with a pillow like they give on airplanes. I didn't know I would have a shared bathroom with one of his renters. The toilet leaked non stop the first time I used it, but was not a continuous issue.
The location is on the Buda side in very nice neighborhood with steep hills.

I had a great time with Mihály. Where I volunteered with him for five days and gained good experience in various matters of the garden and the house. He has a good number of tools to facilitate the work, in addition to his wonderful workshop that enables him to repair anything and create beautiful pieces of art.
Although the duration of the work was a bit long (6 hours a day), it was rich in variety, simple and with immediate outputs that make you feel directly accomplished.
Mihály has a rich culture of travel, music, political opinions, and many stories, etc. Therefore, sitting and listening to him is a beautiful thing in itself. In addition, Mihaly has a long list of sites worth visiting in Budapest and Hungary in general, especially those local sites that enable you to communicate with the local culture and contact with the local population. He took me with him several times to concerts in quiet locations and it was really beautiful.
Thank you Mihály for having me with you and I look forward to visiting you many times in the future. Especially to eat the pasta you made for me as it charmed me more than the ones I ate in Italy!!

Spending time with Mihály was like traveling in time and travelling around the world.
He is very interesting to talk to and shared me a lot of things such as his family history.
He has a beautiful garden. And I mostly worked on compost since he needed it.
In the evening, we went to several different kinds of music concerts together and I love them very much.
Thank you so much for letting me stay and I hope to see you again!
