Cedar Falls is a small farm; Centre of Living and Learning located in rural Mpumalanga province of Southern Africa, Cedar Falls lies between Machadadorp/Entokozweni and Dullstroom. The land is 30 hectares (80 acres) in size, with blue-gum, cedar and eucalyptus forests of approximately 35 acres. Below the forest, the Taute River flows through the land. A magnificent waterfall with wooden deck and braai area lies well-hidden at the foot of the forest. There are three dams, one filled with koi. There are 6 houses on the land, occupied by two sisters, friends, family and staff. Indigenous species include fish eagles, wattle cranes, wild pig, jackal, duiker, mountain reedbuck and scores of bird species. We have four horses (wild), we are surrounded by both game and cattle/sheep/goats farmed by neighbours, mostly renting out their lodges on weekends. Numerous food gardens have been established, with focus on medicinal plants, herbs and organic vegetables (and still growing). Established fruit trees include apple, plum, loquat, grapes, pecan, lemon, orange, prickly pear and granadilla. We harvest our own honey and gather free range eggs from our feathered fowl. The fenced-off enclosed camp site (Camp Kaia) is one of the 6 houses; a space that offers a 3 sleeper including a kitchen-dining area as well as an indoor 'chill' space. Lodging options are Native American tipi's (sleeps 3 each) or two sleeper tents. All are fully equipped w/bedding, with outdoor solar lights. Ablutions are shared (and want to build more). A large circular fire-pit with seating is a prominent feature. We welcome volunteers at any time for periods of two (2) weeks plus. We do suggest that all volunteers take a day or two to settle into their new surrounds and to familiarise themselves with facilities, staff, pets, the town of Machadadorp. We welcome enthusiastic hands-on people keen to teach, assist, learn and implement a sustainABLE way of life, who enJOY nature and being away from the city buzz – must be pet friendly. 4.5 horses, 6 dogs, 2 cats and permanent residents 8, wild animals also Daily activities comprise of gardening (weeding, seeding, harvesting, mowing, composting), clearing of water furrows, fire-breaks (seasonal), logging (cutting fire wood), clearing alongside river removing invasive species, clearing river and the waterfall, construction, hiking trails, helping with meals and cleaning up after oneself. Would love assistance with natural building, general maintenance and creative input. Horse training, chicken management and beekeeping. Accommodation for volunteers and WOOFERS is in either Camp Kaia - an off-grid 2 roomed house with off-grid bathroom (has electricity), a room/or couch in one of the houses (electricity), a tipi or tents, you can also bring your own tent with access to ablutions. Meals: (these will vary depending on group size, how busy we are…and seasonal – with one cooked meal a day) Breakfast - tea, coffee, toast, jam, eggs, porridge (self catering) Lunch – sandwiches, salad or soup from the gardens w/home baked bread (self-catering) Dinner - pasta, stews, salads, braai (barbeque), roast vegs/pap etc. (group effort/rotation) 1. Any special requirements other than above must be supplied by the volunteer/WOOFER. We are not big meat eaters. Can cater for vegetarians but not familiar with vegans. 2. Should volunteers have special meal requirements and/or medical requirements and or allergies, these MUST be communicated/discussed. Places of interest include, Boven offers adventure hiking trails, mountain climbing, paragliding and more, Stone Circle in Waterval Boven (Michael Tellinger). Kloppenheim a four-star hotel (walking distance) offer horse riding, cycling and a massive labyrinth. God’s finger , Pilgrims Rest and …….. are only a mere 1.5 hours away. National Kruger National Park (2hours). Mpumalanga grasslands, the bread-basket of southern Africa stretches across undulating hills, valleys and majestic mountain ranges to Nelspruit, Swaziland, Mozambique (The Nkgangala Corridor). The Highveld Meander a popular tourist and national attraction with weekend getaways tucked in semi-tropical locales. The valleys are well-known destinations for keen trout fishermen (known as the The Trout Triangle), archaeological sites, spa's, retreats, game farms, hiking trails, fishing facilities, resorts and many quaint tourist-type visits a mere 20 minutes – 2 hours away. My personal interests are animals, swimming, plants, medicinal herbs and alternative building. Other languages spoken on the land are Afrikaans, Pedi, Sotho, Swati and Zulu/Xhosa. Doubt any of these are relevant to translate description into.

I spent three weeks at Anne's farm where I received a warm welcome. They made me feel like being at home, and I got along particularly well with the four farmhands who guided us through the tasks. The meals were delicious, and I discovered new fruits and vegetables grown on the farm, such as feijoas, chayote ( that we called soussou’s) and gooseberries. But honestly, what I ate the most were the passion fruits—there were so many! The activities were varied, and I learned a lot about farm management, animals (chickens and horses), water management in the vegetable garden, composting, some building techniques, and companion planting. Although I'm a little disappointed not to have had the opportunity/time to learn about beekeeping, You should definitely love animals because they will love you, specially the dogs very cuddly ! I would definitely come back!
