12 year established tropical homestead
Panama
Hello Wwoofers, my name is James. We are a 12 year established permaculture farm built from the ground up 15 minutes from Playa Venao. We are a family of 4 with two kids under 5 years of age on our cozy 10-acre regenerative working farm and homestead on the Azuero Peninsula of Panama. After years of planting and hard work, we are blessed with an abundance of fruits and vegetables from our food forest. We also butcher our own ethically raised meat (beef, pork, duck) for home consumption in our on farm's industrial kitchen. The Kitchen is the hearth of the farm acting as our magic playland where we revel all things homesteady: from kefir raw milk cheesemaking, to homebrewing to lacto-fermentation. We like to work hard and relax hard, and eat lots of yummy food in between!
We are looking for an individual or a couple who is intrinsically curious and motivated to engage with all homestead life has to offer. This is a working farm for self-sufficiency with well-founded processes and overwhelming supply of produce. Our goal for a volunteer would be to learn and experience daily homestead life in a fun atmosphere that nurtures your creativity and desire to create delicious value added treats.
Learning Opportunities
Our farm has many daily tasks that rotate with the season and vary week to week. We currently need the most help with producing lacto-fermented vegetables (sauerkraut, red peppers, etc), processing fruits and herbs (jackfruit, mango, turmeric, ginger, etc). If you are feeling brave, you are welcome to help milk the goats. Currently expanding our systems to include all natural cosmetics, soapmaking and candle-making. However there is plenty of general garden/food forest maintenance (pruning, planting, woodchipping, etc) and animal husbandry (milking goats, feeding pigs, etc) to be done.
Accommodations
We have an independent guesthouse, 100 yards from the main house, with king size bed and full kitchen with access to a small pool and view of the local island Isla Iguana from the porch . The house has Wifi and hot water for showers.
Breakfast and Lunch are taken together
Dinner is self curated with freely harvested farm veggies & tubers
Responsibilities
We ask for a minimum two weeks commitment to volunteer with us
5 hours roughly a day, 5 days per week
Your free time is yours to hop on a bus down to the beach or go exploring the countryside’s many hidden treasures. It’s not for everyone, but if you are an independent sort who likes to learn new skills, eat good food, work hard, and play hard, this would be a great spot to learn more about tropical permaculture. Write to us to learn more!
Organic methods: We use interplanting, mulching, compost, compost teas, indigenous microorganisms, integrated pasture management, and crop rotation (just to name a few!)
Certifications: we are not certified, but hold ourselves to a higher standard than the organic certification in Panama
Current projects: Currently we are composting and mulching in our gardens to prepare them for dry season. We need help with composting, mulching, pruning, greenhouse work, harvesting, and processing the fruit abundance. We have a tractor and heavy equipment for large projects, greenhouses, etc. We are basically looking for some motivated, hard working, life-loving folks to help & learn! :)
We love cooking, going to the beach, and learning new things! As our farm grows up, we are getting into birding too -- we regularly see toucans from our porch! Panama is a treasure trove of amazing natural hobbies, from hiking , waterfall chasing, surfing, fishing, it all depends on you!

A massive thanks to James, Rebecca, Calliope and Jack for our two week stay at their finca, and for being so welcoming to their first WWOOFers.
They have a very well established system and so there is so much to learn and get involved with great composting and soil health. Amazing kitchen work (beyond vegetable preservation and into cheese making, butchery, charcuterie and home brewing). A variety of animals all serve a purpose in their system (pigs, cattle, ducks, goats). We loved exploring the huge gardens with so many different and interesting trees and plants, and occasionally seeing the resident family of monkeys and toucans!
Breakfast and lunch was shared and food was absolutely delicious, it was a real luxury to share their organic homemade meals. For dinner, we were free to help ourselves to fruits and vegetables from the farm, such as greens, green beans, herbs, limes, papayas etc. There was also a small tienda in the nearby village for other essentials.
The accommodation for the WOOFERS is a separate house about 100m away, with a pool… Absolutely more than enough space including a fully stocked kitchen, fridge and freezer for cooking.
We had such a great time here, and left with so many ideas for the future, if you get the chance to visit you won’t regret it!
