Wildlife Rescue, self sustaining farm
Costa Rica
URGENT ROLES
- Need someone who has building skills or is very hands on to help build a chicken coup, ( involving cutting down old plants in the forest and supporting the erection of a chicken Coup)
My name is Gabriel and I am the president of a wildlife conservation project in Costa Rica as well as the owner of the 42 acre private property that gives the non profit a home and base of operations. Wildlife conservation and rehabilitation are at the core of our project with a secondary new mission and goal of converting the property into biodynamic gardens and a self sustaining farm with the mission providing for all of the animals and people under our care. Our jungle center (dorm style), house, and bungalows allow up to 40 people to live on campus per night and enjoy the beautiful property including pool and jungle/ mountain views. The property is currently home to 2 pet dogs that were rescued and are extremely friendly to everyone they encounter.
WWOOFers help on the private side of the project and have a very unique and varied program. Collecting fruit and making jam, caring for the farm animals, milking goats, brining goods to the farmers market, assisting with the creation of organic sunscreen, maintaining and planting new gardens, collecting leaves for sloths, are just a few daily tasks. All WWOOFers have free days from helping at the project every Sunday and Monday. They are encouraged to help with tasks starting at 7am.
At our farm, WWOOFers have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a wide variety of sustainable farming practices that directly support both people and wildlife. You’ll learn how to milk goats, harvest tropical fruits such as mamonchino, water apples, mango, and noni, and raise laying hens in a tropical environment with creative methods to reduce feed costs, including insect production for animal food. Composting and bioactive gardening are central to our approach, ensuring that the land remains fertile and productive while minimizing waste.
The property houses a 4 story 'Jungle Center" that contains dormitory style bunkbeds, 5 bathrooms, full electricity and WIFI, common spaces, and jungle views. The campus also contains a laundry room, restaurant with chef (we can accommodate any allergies etc.) and staff.
Our facility is less than 15 minutes from the city of Quepos and beach and around 25 minutes from Manuel Antonio National Park. Waterfalls, mountain towns, hiking, birdwatching, are just a few of the activities you and participate in while in the area.

I stayed at KSTR for a little bit more than a month as my first WWOOF experience. It is a great place to get to know many other volunteers from all over the world.
At the moment there a lot of changes happening, especially when it comes to WWOOF. The time ive been there i did a lot of different tasks, not only connected to farming, like painting and construction. That was a not was i expected at all.
Nevertheless because they are new on WWOOF its a work in progress. Now there is much more work on the farm that will keep you occupied on that side of the project. They also started to do volunteer meetings again, to know the needs of everyone, not only work related, to work on that.
Despite that I enjoyed my time there and can recommend it to everyone that wants to meet a lot kind and friendly people and work in a tropical environment.

I had my first WWOOF experience at Kids Saving The Rainforest and I spent almost two months there. I had a good experience and I am overall happy of how it went. The place is amazing and well kept, it is an awesome place to meet a lot of other volunteers as it has a bigger capacity compared to most wwoof hosts (up to 30!). The main issue I found was the big discrepancy between what the profile description says and the tasks I got to do for most of the time: the gardening and livestock keeping is not very well structured and for the first month I had to ask for tasks and things to be helpful with, but this is understandable as they have just started with the Solo Mundo project. Communication hasn't always been clear and many times I felt overwhelmed by the amount of ideas/information/plans so it has been hard to focus on one thing and accomplish it till the end. At times the kithcen hasn't been able to provide a balanced plant based diet and I ended up feeling low in energy for completing the tasks. All in all I think this place has a lot of potential and many good people working on making it a better experience for volunteers. So, despite some work-related inefficiencies, I'm very grateful for this opportunity and I truly wish KSTR the best! Thank you all so much!🙏
