We are a homestead aiming for self sufficiency. We are married partners (Madhu and Sampada) who have moved away from the hustle bustle of city life to this quite village along the western Ghats of India. We are with the help of friends and family, trying to build a permaculture farm which will be self sustainable. Though both of us are Engineers by educational qualifications, we moved away from our core field of study and worked in the sector of education for children coming from less privileged background for more than 15 years. We continue to teach and try to create a welcoming and open learning space for the kids in the village. As we explored various aspects of life, living on a farm is something that stayed with both of us and hence we dived all in. We are conscious and thoughtful of background of people around us and try our best to not judge or put you in any brackets. We are not religious but big fan of Kabir songs and bhajans (Bhakthi poetry). We look forward to the music and movie recommendations from anyone who visit us. We also look forward to learn, cook and exchange recipes with all our visitors. Come prepared with a playlist and a unique recipe that represents the place you come from. We are LGBTQ+ friendly, look forward to challenge existing social, ecological and economic power structures through the lives we lead. Food is a very important part of the exchange and we shall happily accommodate your special needs like Vegan or Jain choices. We started working on our land on 2022 March. In the last 3 years, we are thorough with basic systems like water facility, major tree plantation, drip irrigation, facilities around living space for us and the volunteers and agro tourism setup. We now need help in sustaining these systems, troubleshooting as and when needed, planting and managing vegetable fields, harvesting and processing various fruits, grains, pulses, vegetables and more. Some activities are yet to start like, making bunds to arrest soil erosion, building check dams to harvest water, planting/building live fence around the farm. Spending time on our farm can be a great opportunity for people wanting to learn sustainable farming/gardening practices. We have a mud house built using traditional methods which has attic space for volunteers to stay. We have accommodated more than 10 people at a time. It is a basic dorm style accommodation which will be shared when there are more volunteers. Private rooms can be made available (in the attic space) to couples and long term volunteers (more than 1 month). There are enough spaces around the house to pitch tents. We provide mattress (hard foam) and beddings (bed sheet, pillow, warm blankets) and mosquito net. There is a provision of hot water kettle, tea powder, coffee and sugar in he volunteers space. All meals and tea will be provided. We expect you to help us with cooking and cleaning post meals. We live in small traditional village based in Western Maharashtra, a state of India. It is a coastal belt. Volunteers will be able to interact with the villagers and explore traditional Konkani cuisine, local fish, forage wild seasonal food, experience traditional form of devotional hymns (abhang and bhajans). You can join us while cooking and learn some local bread making skills. Festivals are celebrated with great enthusiasm and villagers would love for you to be a part of it. There is always singing and dancing (traditional style) during every festivals. We regularly have musical/JAM sessions where we exchange songs from various countries and in different languages. We have some instruments like ukulele, flute, harmonica, cymbals and khartals. Feel free to bring your own instruments.

I loved my stay in Chirakvan! The rythm of life, the super cool host, the beautiful place to discover in your free time… Madhu and Sampada are very kind and interesting people, they answered my thousands question about the farm, nature and the way of living in India in general. The farm on itself is very beautiful, you can see lots of birds, frogs and fish down at the river in wich you can swim! I could also mention the delicious food, the welcoming people of the village and the very cute dog but I prefer to strongly advice everybody to go and discover it by themself! I know I want to go back myself if life bring me back to India!(:

I am so grateful for my time at Chirak Van with Sampada and Mahdu, I had a truly amazing time and I can’t wait to come back sometime! During the first part of my stay we did a lot of mulching, sowing new seeds, propagating plant off cuts and harvested all sorts throughout my stay. I came back just in time to finish the last of the mulching and the beginning of turmeric harvest of 26! With the earlier starts for working in the morning there is loads of free time to chill, go swimming, explore or get the bus to the next town. The river is very clean and only a few minutes walk away, so is perfect way to cool down and clean off after working in field. Theress also a lot of cool birds and wildlife which are so fun to spot, especially from the rooftop which has amazing views of the mountains. It was also a great place to work, read and chill during the day with the breeze, I especially liked the hammock! Everyone was wonderfully kind, caring and funny and instantly make you feel at ease, even for me being neurodivergent. When my plane got cancelled TWICE they instantly reassured me I could stay as long as I needed until I was able to rearrange another one. Even after I had already left for the airport they warmly welcomed me right back. Arriving back again felt like coming home, it was so comforting being back somewhere I felt so safe and comfortable. Even the workers are so welcoming and always invite you over, show you around and being you to their holidays and celebrations.

Where do I start. Chirakvan is an amazing place that I enjoyed for many reasons: meals were fantastic, conversations around the meals were fun and insightful, the river and waterfall that the property touches are insanely beautiful, the nearby beach town of Anjarle was wonderful to take day trips to, ample opportunities to watch and participate in events at the local village, work times were very reasonable and mostly consistent so I could get into a routine of other activities like reading (shout out to "The One Straw Revolution" book) and writing in the up stairs patio area, also Madhu and Sampada have a lot of cool knowledge of the local ecosystem that they shared. All those things were great but the biggest thing I appreciated was that Sampada and Madhu werent shaking their fists at the sky complaining about all the ways they think the world could be better, they were actually getting their boots on the ground and making the differences they wanted to see in the world. As someone who grew up with the internet I have been exposed to a lot of people online who talk a big game but don't back it up with action. It was inspiring and refreshing to see people who inverted that pattern. Things on the negative side to be aware of: the paths around the property arent the nicest so sometimes its easy to lose your footing, and also, be warned that you will be immersed in the ecosystem in the best (nature's beauty and its cycles) and worse (bugs, critters, climate, etc) ways.

What an experience!! What an experience it was with Dalan living with us for 3 wonderful months. So much laughter, discussions, riddles and facts, conversations on politics, food, books, random facts and so much more. Dalan brought a lot to the table. Dalan is an excellent carpenter and he primarily helped us with making loads of furniture from recycled wood. Benches, coffee tables, swings, fixing old beds, windows for volunteer spaces, making spaces mosquito proof - all this was done single handedly by Dalan. and that's the best part about him - he has strong work ethics, can work independently, is self motivated and disciplined about everything he takes up. We experienced all these qualities not just from the tasks assigned to him but also we could see all those values being reflected when he picked up few books to read from our library. This simply proves that he is very eager to learn new things and that too very thoroughly. Dalan is a very people person and needs no introduction to make friends with anyone and everyone. Beyond the volunteering tasks, he also gave us a wonderful time with music, some jaw dropping stories and many non sensical yet funny jokes. Dalan is kind hearted soul and we saw it in his behavior towards our neighbors, visitors who came to our house, our pets and fellow volunteers. Experience with Dalan has been one of the best we have had. We are super grateful to him for giving us his 3 months. What a life! it was with him being here :)

Absolutely fantastic! The farm is beautiful, situated just outside the village in the woods by the river and growing a diverse range of organic produce working towards establishing a permaculture. It was a pleasure getting to know Sampada and Madhu and their two lovely dogs! I learned a great deal for my work on the farm, and thoroughly enjoyed spending most of the rest of my time writing music. Sunita tai made fantastic food every day and I feel nourished from my visit. I hope to come back to Chirak Van someday and see how it has continued to grow.

Roo brought in a lot of positive energy with beautiful smiles and music at a time when we were going through some personal struggles. His presence helped us take a step back, calm ourselves and enjoy a wonderful time with him. Roo is a highly accomplished musician and I don't feel myself eligible to comment about the same. Roo shared a lot of history of his family regarding the music and the violin he plays. It was very inspiring to hear about his musical journey. Roo was very disciplined and committed to the tasks during the day and post lunch was mostly involved in practicing and writing his music. I feel happy that we were able to provide him the space in which he could continue his music lessons. We feel grateful to have shared this time with him. We would warmly welcome him back anytime and highly recommend him to any future hosts.
