Dala Maler is an off-grid homestead in rural Kenya practicing natural farming.
Kenya
My name is Akoth. After over 20 years in the U.S., I returned to my homeland in rural South Western Kenya, Migori County, close to the Tanzanian border. Driven by a deep longing to reconnect with my roots and serve my community, I am building Dala Maler—a self-sustaining homestead rooted in natural farming and indigenous wisdom.
About Dala Maler
In Luo, “Dala” means “home” and “Maler” means “Clean/Light.” Dala Maler is more than a home—it is a vision, a peaceful space for growth and connection. Where earth kin from near and far gather to live simply, cultivate the land, share knowledge, and nurture each other in community.
We are a small team: myself Akoth, and my sister-in-love, Stacey. When Akoth travels out of Kenya, Stacey is the one in charge of managing daily operations, and is part and parcel of the project. Though it is a private home, it has a communal vision. And while the two of us are not trained farmers, we are passionate learners. We are guided by the rhythms of nature, indigenous land knowledge, permaculture, syntropic agroforestry, and natural farming principles. Together, we honor the wisdom passed down through our community and the earth beneath our feet.
Our Lifestyle & Daily Rhythm
Life at Dala Maler is intentional, gentle, and deeply connected to nature’s flow. We cook mostly from our garden and live simply, relying on basic, sustainable systems: water from a well powered by solar or manual pump; composting toilets and bush sanitation; solar energy for lighting and charging; outdoor fire cooking with propane backup. Our meals are hearty at breakfast and lunch, lighter in the evening with tea and snacks. Without electricity, our days follow the sun’s rhythm, inviting WWOOFers to disconnect and reconnect deeply with nature.
Community & Culture
Our village primarily speaks Luo, though many young people also speak English and Kiswahili. We encourage cultural exchange and can help you learn local languages and connect with traditional knowledge holders.
An Invitation
If you seek to slow down, reconnect with the earth, and live simply within a vibrant rural community, Dala Maler warmly welcomes you. This is a place of healing, learning, and co-creation. Bring your whole self, your curiosity, and your magic—we look forward to growing together.
Our farming activities follow the rhythm of the seasons and include planting, weeding, harvesting, composting, seed saving, animal care, and basic beekeeping. We plan on building a cob oven soon.
WWOOFers can learn about herbal medicine, local food preparation, and traditional skills through daily work and cultural exchange. For skills like pottery and basket weaving, we may need to know in advance and communicate with the knowledge keepers to ensure their availability.
A typical day might look like:
7:30 AM – Morning tea and light breakfast
8:00 – 11:00 AM – Farm tasks or building
1:00 PM – Shared lunch (We take turns to cook)
Afternoon – Reflection, rest, or personal time away for Guest,
Evening – Tea and light meal, storytelling, or music by the fire
WWOOFers will be housed in simple, comfortable accommodations that reflect our off-grid, natural lifestyle. Options include a cozy traditional mud hut (sleeps 2), tents we provide, or camping spaces if you bring your own gear. The space is peaceful, rustic, and fully immersed in nature. Beddings are provided.
We provide three meals a day, mostly prepared with fresh, local ingredients from our garden. Meals are simple, healthy, and shared in community. If you have special dietary needs or prefer imported/exotic foods, we ask that you let us know in advance and consider shopping for those items in Migori. We do not have a fridge.
Our Hobbies and Interests
Life at Dala Maler is slow and creative. We enjoy cooking and sharing meals, listening to music, dancing on weekends, reading, light fitness or stretching, and quiet moments with books or conversation. Sometimes we attend church on Sundays, visit nearby farms to learn and connect, and explore traditional skills. You’re welcome to bring your own hobbies—this is a space for sharing and growing together. We’re also travel enthusiasts and often visit nearby towns and countries, especially Tanzania. When we travel by car, we kindly ask to share fuel costs.
Nearby Activities & Weekend Adventures
On weekends, we like trips to the beaches at Muhuru Bay or Kisumu for swimming and relaxing by Lake Victoria. The peaceful countryside offers plenty of walking and exploring, even without marked hiking trails. We enjoy visiting local markets, farms, and cultural sites, and sometimes take longer trips to places like Ruma National Park, Rusinga Island, or Maasai Mara. There’s always something beautiful to discover, both on and off the farm, and you are welcome to explore these individually as well.

I had a wonderful time at Dala Maler! I worked with Stacey building a mud wall, weeding and planting seeds. Everything was organised ahead of time by Akoth, who helped me get the bus from Nairobi to Migori and then organised for me to be driven back to Nairobi afterwards. Her lovely parents even hosted me for breakfast on arrival in Migori! At the weekend Stacey took me to Lake Victoria and also to meet a family from another tribe, it was an incredible cultural experience and a real taste of village life in Kenya. I heartily recommend people visit!
