Welcome to our Farm in Mutai! Nestled in the peaceful countryside of Mutai, Jinja City
Uganda
Hi! My name is Bimbasa, and I run a small, hands-on maize farm in the quiet village of Mutai, located in the heart of rural Uganda. I’ve been farming here for several years, focusing on sustainable and traditional methods of maize cultivation. The farm is not just a place of work—it’s a way of life that’s deeply connected to the land and the local community.
I live on the farm with my family members, e.g wife and two children, brother and we all take part in the daily work. We love welcoming new people from different parts of the world who are curious to learn about farming and experience our way of life.
We also share our home with a few friendly animals, e.g., “a loyal dog named Simba, a couple of cats, and some free-range chickens. They’re part of the family too and always enjoy the company of visitors.
At the core of our project is the goal to grow food in harmony with nature, preserve local farming knowledge, and create a space where people can connect, share skills, and enjoy a slower, more grounded lifestyle.
Life on the farm follows the rhythm of the seasons. Our main crop is maize, and we are involved in every step of its growth—from preparing the land and planting, to weeding, harvesting, and storage. Depending on the time of year, WWOOFers may take part in:
• Preparing planting beds and composting
• Sowing maize by hand
• Mulching and weeding
• Irrigation and water management (where needed)
• Harvesting and drying maize
• Sorting, shelling, and storing the harvest
• Helping with small construction or repairs around the farm
• Feeding and caring for our animals
We welcome WWOOFers to learn through doing. You’ll gain first-hand experience with traditional and sustainable farming techniques, and we’re always happy to share what we know about soil health, crop rotation, seed saving, and how maize is used locally for food.
A Typical Day on the Farm
• 7:00 AM: Wake up and enjoy a simple breakfast together
• 7:30 AM – 11:00 AM: Morning farm work—this could be planting, weeding, or harvesting, depending on the season
• 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM: Break and relax under some shade, maybe help with lunch preparation
• 12:30 PM – 2:00 PM: Lunch and rest during the hottest part of the day
• 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM: Light afternoon tasks—watering, feeding animals, or learning something new (e.g., how to shell and store maize)
• Evening: Free time to relax, take a walk around the village, or help prepare dinner. We usually eat together and enjoy sharing stories and local traditions.
Weekends are often more relaxed, and you’ll have time to explore the area or just unwind.
WWOOFers will stay right here on the farm in a simple, clean guest room or shared sleeping space. The accommodation is basic but comfortable, with a bed, mosquito net, and access to clean water and a toilet. Depending on availability, you may have your own room or share with another WWOOFer of the same gender.
We believe in sharing meals and time together as part of the experience. We provide three meals a day, usually made with fresh ingredients from the farm or local market. Typical meals include Ugsndan staples like, sukuma wiki (greens), beans, maize, chapati, rice, and seasonal fruits. We’re happy to accommodate vegetarian or other dietary needs—just let us know in advance.
WWOOFers are welcome to join us in the kitchen to help cook, learn local recipes, or share recipes from your own culture!
We want you to feel at home here. There’s space to relax after a day’s work, and plenty of chances to engage with the daily rhythm of farm life and our community.
When the work is done, we enjoy spending time with music, storytelling, and cooking traditional meals together. I love sharing Ugandan music and learning about other cultures through songs and food—WWOOFers are always welcome to join in, sing along, or even teach us something new from their own country! Cooking is another big part of life here, and we often prepare meals as a group, using fresh ingredients straight from the farm.
The surrounding area of Mutai is peaceful and beautiful, with open fields, gentle hills, and quiet paths—perfect for walking or hiking in your free time. On hot days, there are local rivers or streams nearby where you can go for a refreshing swim or just relax by the water. Sometimes we also visit nearby markets or villages, where you can experience local life, try new foods, or buy handmade items.
We encourage WWOOFers to take time to rest, explore, and enjoy the natural beauty and culture of the area—it’s all part of the experience!
