Its a 50 acre degraded hill restoration project with native endemics using nature based methods.
Sri Lanka
Hello World, My name is Jayantha Wijesingha and I am from Rainforest Protectors of Sri Lanka, an environmental organization in Sri Lanka. We are working on a few restoration projects and Balangoda reforestation project where we plant and restore a 50 acre degraded hill with nature practices with some of our volunteers named Methma and Biseka. The project is location in Rajawaka forest reserve managed under the department of forest conservation in Sri Lanka. We have two dogs named Gini and Kiki :)
We are teaching you how a rainforest restoration is done from the scratch in an are which is classified as an intermediate zone area and our typical days of work usually vary based on weather. However the activities would be to,
1) Manage the plant nursery and potting plants from soil in the farm land itself
2) Planting trees in the restoration area during the rainy season
3) removing invasives and caring/watering and managing planted area during the dry days.
4) Managing shade and species diversity and ensuring soil conservation work is carried our when and where necessary.
We have a Bamboo house made completely from Bamboo, A mud house, a traditional mud house built by us and a regular rural house. we have bedding for 10 people.
We have a lady from the village who comes daily to cook for volunteers. So you have all 3 meals served. Often the breakfast is bread based while the lunch and dinner is often rice and curry Sri Lankan style. A small donation is appreciated to cover costs and towards the project as we are a small community based organization with a vision. Also you will be happy to know she is the poorest in the village with 2 school going kids. So your donation will help her and family immensely 🫡"
There is plenty of hiking spots, river baths, waterfalls and even temples to visit. We try to take you on off days to these places so you can have a great day out :)
We also have a Karoke set and so many board and card games to play during leisure time.

🌿 My Experience at the Rainforest Project in Sri Lanka 🌿
I had the opportunity to spend a week as a WWOOFer at the Rainforest Project with Jay – and it was truly an unforgettable experience. I was deeply impressed by the dedication and passion with which Jay runs this project. His team was always there for us, supporting us and making our stay incredibly enjoyable.
During my time there, I not only contributed through hands-on work, but also learned a lot about the current situation of the rainforest and the relationship between local communities and nature. Our tasks included watering young seedlings, maintaining areas that had been spared from the fire, and recycling plastic waste into bottles for later use.
Outside of the work, the project felt like a true paradise: surrounded by rainforest, monkeys, and giant squirrels, it was the perfect place to relax – either enjoying some quiet time alone or spending quality moments with the other volunteers.
This week was an enriching combination of meaningful work, deep nature experiences, and a warm, welcoming community. I can wholeheartedly recommend the Rainforest Project to anyone who wants to actively contribute to nature conservation while enjoying a unique time in the Rainforeat Project.

They don’t have any reviews on wwoof yet because they’ve just joined this platform, but many volunteers from other platforms have already stayed here. As soon as you walk into the house you get it: there’s a whole wall covered with notes from people who’ve stayed here, and they all say the same thing, they had an amazing time. I can totally confirm that! It’s a super peaceful place, with really kind people. I had such a great experience: the food is delicious, the vibe is relaxed and friendly. The reforestation project itself is really interesting and makes the experience even more meaningful
Just so you know, since it’s an association, there’s a small contribution of about 7$/day (for food, transport, etc.), but honestly it’s worth it. I’d definitely come back!
