A sustainable farming and training project empowering orphans, youth, & rural families
Uganda
We are Baraka African Cultural Center, a youth- and community-driven organization based in Kampala, Uganda, with a sustainable farm project in Bussunju along Hoima Road. Our mission is to empower orphans, youth, and rural families through culture, farming, and life skills.
At our headquarters in Kampala, we host around 25 vibrant young people, including performers and young orphans, who are involved in music, dance, drama, and community outreach. Volunteers stay here and also travel with us to the farm for hands-on agricultural projects.
Our Baraka Farmers Corner in Bussunju is home to friendly farm workers and a warm local community that practices small-scale farming. The farm has goats, chickens, rabbits, cattle, turkeys, ducks, and a lovely dog.
Whether you're passionate about farming, cultural exchange, or simply love working with people, you'll find a welcoming family and meaningful work with us.
At Baraka Farmers Corner, our typical farming activities include planting and weeding crops, feeding animals, cleaning shelters, making compost, harvesting, and sometimes building simple farm structures like chicken houses or goat sheds.
We practice sustainable and climate-smart farming, and we love teaching WWOOFers about:
Organic gardening and crop rotation
Caring for animals like goats, chickens, rabbits, and cows
Making natural fertilizers and compost
Tree planting and soil conservation
Community farming and cooperative work
A typical day starts around 8:00 AM with morning feeding of the animals, then work in the garden or on a project like building or planting. We usually take a break for lunch around 1:00 PM, rest, then continue lighter tasks in the afternoon. We wrap up farm work by 5:00 PM, followed by time to relax, share stories, or enjoy music and dance with the youth back at the center.
We believe in working together, learning from each other, and having fun while doing meaningful work that helps the community.
WWOOFers will stay at our headquarters in Kampala and occasionally at our farm in Bussunju during project days. In Kampala, we provide shared rooms with beds, mosquito nets, and access to clean bathrooms, running water, and electricity. At the farm, we offer simple but comfortable accommodation, with clean bedding, outdoor bathrooms , and a peaceful village atmosphere.
We provide three healthy meals a day, including local Ugandan dishes made from fresh ingredients — many from our own farm! Volunteers are welcome to join in cooking and learn how to prepare traditional meals. Clean drinking water and tea are always available.
We aim to make all WWOOFers feel safe, supported, and part of our extended family during their time with us.
At Baraka African Cultural Center, we love to share our Ugandan culture and creativity! Many of our youth are passionate about music, dance, and drama, and we often have evening drumming sessions, cultural dance performances, and storytelling. Volunteers are welcome to join in — no experience needed!
We also enjoy cooking traditional meals, playing games, and having cultural exchange nights where we learn about your country too.
Nearby, there are several things to enjoy:
- Nature walks and light hiking in the beautiful countryside around Bussunju
- Community visits to see how local people live and farm
- Peaceful time for relaxation, journaling, or meditation at the farm
Whether you want to immerse yourself in the rhythm of African drums or just enjoy village life under the stars, there’s always something to experience with us.
