Gardening, goats, forest and serenity - Almost like time travel to 100 years ago

Finland
Apples, pumpkins, corn, potatoes and beetroots from our garden. :)

Hi there! My name is Kunjarani, and with my husband Sundara and friends we are developing an old farm property towards self-sufficiency since 2012. We are all free-spirited Hare Krishna-devotees, and have a positive view on world. If interested, you are also welcome to join our daily kirtan-programs and discussions on Vedic philosophy. We have a garden where we grow organic vegetables to last through all year for our community's use. Hence Finland has long winter, we store most of our roots in our cellar, and dry, pickle, freeze and ferment greens, vegetables, fruits, berries and wild herbs. In gardening we follow moon calendar for better results, and this is something I’m always interested to discuss more. You will be working with me and other helpers (if present) five days a week for four hours per day, from 12 to 4pm. May and June are busiest for gardening, and then later months we mainly work around the farm with many different projects: renovation and building, collecting and chopping firewood, painting, DIY-projects, etc. Our no-dig vegetable plots might need a little help with weeding, cow manure, fresh grass mulch, planting seeds and seedlings, watering and thinning. Late July and August starts harvesting season with beans and other early vegetables. September is time for main harvesting and preserving. October is time for cleaning and covering the fields with fresh layer of cow manure, mulch and straw. We eat lunch together with our community members at 4pm, and after lunch you are welcome to sing and play kirtan (mantras) with us. On weekend mornings you are also welcome to join our morning program from 8 to 9.30. We sing more mantras and read from our sacred book (Srimad-Bhagavatam). We have goats and take our herd almost daily out to nearby forest for free foraging, and it is a really nice experience to walk with the goats. We are taking care of honey bees in a sustainable, natural and bee-friendly way, and if you are comfortable around them, you can also join. While staying with us you have quite limited possibilities for other experiences than the farm itself, as we have limited amount of public transportation available in our small village (during school morning and evening bus). We can borrow you a bike and you can explore the beautiful nature around us. 10km from the farm there is a bigger town called Orimattila where are shops, and sometimes we go for a swim at the lake there, or visit nearby cities for Harinama (singing mantras in the street or park). Whenever you need something from the shop you can join us or ask us to bring you what you need. We don't have WiFi, and internet connection can be week at the farm, but better at the accommodation. Mobile operator that has the best connection at our place is called DNA, and you from every shop you can buy Prepaid-deals where you get access to unlimited data for 20€/30€ per month. The same SIM will be applicable with some limit in other EU-countries also. You will be accommodated in a shared row house flat with other wwoofers a small walking distance away from the farm with modern amenities. At the farm there is no running water or WC/water closet, only outhouse. We have two wonderfully tasty wild springs to drink and draw nourishing water from, and a pond and two saunas. We will prepare (you can join in cooking) a healthy and delicious vegetarian meal every day at 4pm, and provide you with ingredients for breakfast and other food at the row house flat. As a community we are committed to a life of clarity and non-violence, and will expect you to honor this by not bringing alcohol, cigarettes or any other intoxicants, meat, fish or eggs into our community. Thank you for appreciating and understanding our core values. We will provide you with happy and karma-free atmosphere instead, and share our skills on self sustainability. :)

I spent two incredible weeks at the farm. Kunjarani, Sandara, and the other residents welcomed me warmly and with open arms; I felt right at home. The work and conversations always took place in a joyful, cheerful atmosphere. The food is excellent—mostly sourced from the farm—and you can even enjoy delicious homemade caramels. The work is interesting and varied, and Kunjarani always takes the time to explain things clearly. In short, thank you again for the two weeks we spent together, and I hope to return one day.

We stayed just for 4 nights at this farm. Kunjarani and the other members at the farm were all so nice and welcoming from the beginning. All the communications and workflow were very clear and we had a good balance between work and private time. Work varies each day and we could tell our preferences too. We can totally recommend this farm to anyone for both a short and long term :)

I felt very lucky to visit this farm! Kunjarani was very sensitive to everyone having a pleasant visit and the work felt very fair in return for the comfortable lodging and delicious food. We also had lots of opportunities to visit nearby lakes and even did a trip down to Helsinki when another WWOOFer was flying out. I hope I have the opportunity to visit this farm again!

It was such a nice stay at this farm!! I stayed just about ten days, but Kunjarani and other people at that farm warmly welcomed me, so I could feel relieved. I could experience not just farm work, but some special things. I walked around a big forest next to the farm with goats. I took sauna twice. I could also experience a day called midsummer. On that day, Hare Krishna community was gathered, and celebrated the day together. I really appreciate those amazing experiences. About the farming, I could enjoy the work since I could have a nice conversation with Kunjarani and other workers. Thank you so much for everything!!;)) When I have a chance to travel Finland again, I will definitely visit your place!!

I had a wonderful time here! Kunjaranj is very warm, friendly, and fun and easy to talk to, and she will make you feel immediately welcome in the farming community she, her husband, and their friends have established and are continuing to nurture. It was my first time in another country, but I had no trouble adjusting thanks in large part to everyone's kindness. I mostly worked in the gardens with Kunjarani and/or other WWOOFers or friends of hers who were visiting; we weeded, planted potatoes, brought out plants from the greenhouse to harden off, transplanted and mulched a variety of saplings, etc. The area is beautiful, and there is an adjacent forest for walking their two goats (the view from the top of the hill is amazing), which I had the privilege of doing with Kunjarani on my second day. The work is clearly structured and communicated, and the lunches were always delicious. And if you want, you can join the Hare Krishna singing after lunch, which is lovely to be a part of. Their bee boxes were also right behind the rowhouse I stayed in, and I really enjoyed watching them and listening to their active buzzing on sunny days. :)
