Since 2016, the Sumba Hospitality Foundation (SHF) has been making high-quality vocational training accessible to Sumbanese youth. Every year, 72 students specialise in a department of their choice (Culinary, Food & Beverage, Front Office, Spa, or Housekeeping), taught intensively in combination with English, life skills and sustainability. At SHF, responsible tourism is put into practice as our students gain work experience throughout their learning journey at our training hotel Maringi Sumba or training restaurant Makan Dulu. Integrate permaculture principles into farming practices Conduct an assessment of current farming methods and identify opportunities to integrate permaculture principles. Develop and implement designs for farm plots that reflect permaculture ethics of earth care, people care, and fair share. Create visual guides or plans to help farm workers understand and apply permaculture concepts effectively. Manage vegetable plants, including harvesting and plant processing methods Optimize green spaces for food production using permaculture concepts Analyze the existing layout of green spaces and recommend changes to maximize food production while maintaining biodiversity. Design and implement food forests, edible landscapes, or vertical gardens in underutilized areas. Work with the landscaping team to create aesthetically pleasing yet productive spaces that align with the Foundation’s goals of sustainability and responsible tourism. Teach and share knowledge about permaculture, sustainable, and regenerative living practices Host workshops and hands-on training sessions for staff, students, and community members to promote understanding of permaculture principles and practices. Create educational materials, such as presentations or pamphlets, tailored for different audiences, from beginners to advanced practitioners.. Work with the team to ensure soil health, manage erosion, and maintain the balance between native vegetation and productive areas. Help create plans for future landscape projects, considering ecological sustainability, aesthetic appeal, and community needs. As part of the SHF family, airport transfer, housing and 3 meals a day are provided. Weekly cleaning of your room and laundry is also included. Many beaches, waterfalls and beautiful nature around us.

My experience at this foundation was deeply meaningful and inspiring. I was involved in the permaculture area, where I had the chance to work with very kind and polite people, learning a lot through hands-on tasks such as planting, harvesting, composting, and soil preparation. This was my first WWOOF experience, and I truly couldn’t have asked for anything better. My expectations were far exceeded, not only did I get to fully immerse myself in permaculture, which was my main goal, but I also found myself in a foundation whose core mission is to educate and empower local youth through a hospitality school. That makes this place truly unique and special. The environment is dynamic, purpose-driven, and strongly rooted in values of sustainability, education, and community. I also had the opportunity to give classes on entrepreneurship to students, which was a personal highlight. The work is physically demanding but very rewarding, and the connection with nature and people makes it all worthwhile. I highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to contribute meaningfully and be part of something impactful.
