Greetings! We are three families regenerating a farm with the aim of achieving food sovereignty in Iceland. We were motivated to leave our city life behind and focus on regeneration of the Earth and aiming for promoting sustainability on our community. So here we are, five years later, making our dreams a reality in our farm paradise in the beautiful Svarfaðardalur valley in the North of Iceland. We have beautiful mountains surrounding our farm which are perfect for hiking. We also have a river border which is a calming asset when working out in the field. Inside of our home, we have one cat and one dog living with us. We are multicultural families with anthroposofical values, which we apply to our lifestyle and environment. We have experience with Waldorf education, Biodynamic farming and holistic medicine approach. During this time of the year, we are looking for travelers with gardening experience and also with carpentry experience, since the home projects currently developing are building and fixing old infrastructure, fencing, building a greenhouse, etc. We will provide a private room which is conveniently located close to the bathroom and kitchen. Food dynamic will work differently for each meal: Breakfast items will be available for anyone to help themselves. Warm lunch will be prepared by rotating members of the house and/or volunteers. Dinners can vary between warm meals or cold where anyone can help themselves. Our volunteers enjoy of the perks of enjoying horseback riding, going to the local hot pools, or visiting art exhibitions in the local Culture House or art spaces in the region. We have a car available for local transport which we could borrow to volunteers with driver's license and experience driving manual car.

The two months I stayed at Sydra Holt went by so quickly. Everybody in this family was really welcoming and through my stay there I met a lot of other volunteers. I really enjoyed working with everybody and I learned a lot about farming, growing your own vegetables and how to start a project. I stayed in May and June so we prepared some beds and fields, planted a lot of vegetables like salad and kale. I sowed some beetroot and cabbage and made a lot of nettle juice to water the plants. We started working in the morning at 10 a.m. and had some lunch around one o' clock. The food was always really delicious and mostly from the farm. Every Friday we had Pizza Party all together. And we had some fun game nights and campfires. I had two days off each week and a lot of time to explore the area, go horse riding (several times), go to the hot tubs in Dalvik and Hjalteyri (we saw some whales there) or just bike around and explore the mountains and waterfalls of North Iceland. I am already looking forward to visiting again at another time of the year and seeing all the projects coming to life. I would definitly recommend this special place and staying with this lovely family!

Looking back at my first WWOOFing experience, I'm filled with warmth! Everything was new to me and the family helped me out with patience every time. Working days are long, I think more than averege, but then as well there were some extra half days off, beside the agreed days off. And of course the working time is what it takes to keep the farm running. I look back with an enormous respect to what this family wants to create in and for the community, their philosophy and view on the world. I would love to see the farm in another time of the year to get a full understanding. Activities in September were mostly harvesting: carrots, beatroots, cabbages, green and black kale, kohlrabi, fennel, eatable flowers,... washing and packaging for the CSA members, and a little bit of selling at the market. But I also took part in building the interior of the greenhouse: loosening the soil, taking rocks out, adding compost and planting salad. I had free time to do whale watching, Icelandic horseback riding, making a trip to Myvatn, going to the local swiming pool (with hot tubs), and a local hot tub nearby, where you could cool down in the sea and see whales spout from inside the hot tub! In short, a very inspiring trip and family!

We had a wonderful wwoof experience in Syðra Holt! All the family welcomed us with open arms and heart since the very beginning of our stay. The main activities we took part in: planting forest trees, preparing beds for the garden plantlets, planting beetroots and other vegetables, feeding chickens and geese. We really enjoyed cooking and sharing the food moments, all the meals has been an amazing exchange opportunity of different cultures sitting by the same table. Beside the work on the farm, we have been given the chance to experience fishing in local river, ride Icelandic horses, have a tour in the close by micro brewery and tasting the first Icelandic craft beer. And last but not least, seeing the outstanding landscape of the northern cost. Thanks for having us! We definitely recommend to go wwoofing at Syðra Holt!
