Permaculture Organic/Regenerative Farming & Workshops
Indonesia
Welcome to our little secret hideaway hidden in the jungle just north of Ubud Bali ! We started Ubud Permaculture Community on our family land during COVID as we all lost our jobs in tourism. My name is Wayan and I run the Community with my brother Nyoman and our extended families. We all live in the local village about 500 metres from the farm, and if you decide to stay us you will have your own fully equipped tent (see photos). You will be staying with Susu & Taksu our cows, Happy & Lili our farm cats, Adam & Eve and their extended duckling family and the occasional monkey !
Our farm is totally based on Permaculture Organic principles and we have over 70 varieties of fruit and vegetables to tend daily. A typical day starts as the sun rises by feeding the animals and watering the gardens, before collecting the manure from Susu's house to make compost. We would love to share with you all of the permaculture knowledge that we have picked up in the last few years, and invite you to help us with the many digging, gardening and maintenance activities needed to keep the whole place looking beautiful and productive. Staying with us you will step back in time, living essentially as a traditional Balinese farmer lives !
We also hold a Farmer's and Art Market on the last Sunday of every month where you will get to meet our wonderful local community of Farmers and Artists, and often our volunteers like to help us out with some of the children's workshops.
You will be sleeping in one of our 4 large tents, each hidden away in the jungle with lots of privacy from the other volunteers. They are fully equipped with comfortable bed, sheets, pillow, tables and chairs. We will be sharing meals with you in one of the many outbuildings dotted around the site. To cool down after a days work you can either use our beautiful outdoor jungle shower (cold water only I am afraid!) or stand under our waterfall fed by the water from the Holy Spring !
Please note that the Calendar on this site only allows for 1 planned visit per host, so even if the calendar shows that we have a planned visit we may still have availability as we now have 4 tents !
We are primarily an Educational Institution rather than a commercial farm so your contribution will also help us in our mission to encourage local Balinese farmers to learn and adopt Permaculture principles. While you are staying with us you will have lots of opportunities to learn about Balinese culture, Balinese cooking and of course getting a deep insight into the joys and pains of tropical permaculture living. We are surrounded by beautiful traditional rice paddies where you can walk or cycle for miles away from the busy centre of Ubud. If you wish to experience the many alternative healing and yoga options (and of course the vibrant nightlife! ) of Ubud it is only 10 minutes away by motorbike,

I spent 2,5 weeks at Ubud permaculture. It is my first wwoof experience. Nyoman is very welcoming. Together with another woman, we removed the grass, covered the beds with rice straw, and planted small vegetables and flowers. Two men, together with Nyoman, were making a jungle toulet and shower, made from bamboo.
In 2,5 weeks the placed turned beautiful. I liked working outside, with my hands, see the result of what u do every day.
We also enjoyed having massage at Sri beauty, visiting Kecak dance and the Arma museum in Ubud, which us close to Ubud permaculture.
I was lucky to see a ceremony in the temple.
I can higly recommend this place, if u r looking for peace and beauty. I had a great experience.

It was a wonderful experience in a magnificent setting. A farm that respects the environment and the woofers, with a desire to share their culture and expertise. It was a real pleasure to spend time with such caring people on a permaculture project that quickly became a favorite. An unforgettable week, one we can't recommend enough! A big thank you to them!

I stayed for eight days. My main tasks were mixing compost into the soil, weeding the garden and paths, and cleaning up fallen leaves. Unfortunately, the days were mostly rainy, I couldn’t work so much. During the week I was there, a village ceremony to ready, and Nyoman was very busy, so we couldn't talk very much. But when I asked him questions after I came back to Japan, he answered every question, so all my doubts were resolved!
The tent was spacious and had a good bed, making for a very comfortable stay.
The things I found difficult were that laundry couldn’t dry due to the rain, cold shower and there were many larvae in the field. The things I found good were that I felt like a part of nature, everyone was truly kind, I could work at my own pace, and it was easy to go to Ubud. It's useful to have a headlamp and a SIM card!
Thank you hen, chicks, Susu, Taksu, Happy and Lili. I really enjoyed the time spent with you. Eva and Nigel, thank you for patiently sticking with my flawed English and speaking slowly for me. I’m sorry if I ever gave an off‑target response.
Nyoman always said “Take your time, have a rest,” to me and welcomed me like family. I could relax my stay. The meals he and his family made were more delicious than the restaurants in Ubud! I truly appreciate you giving me your precious time!
Wayan treated me like a daughter and was incredibly kind. He recommended tourist spots and spoke to me in Japanese, which made me feel so at ease! Thank you!!!

I had such a wonderful time at Ubud Permaculture. It was an amazing opportunity to get to know about the highlights and the struggles around setting up a permaculture farm in a tropical climate. The family were so kind and the wellbeing of the WWOOF volunteers was their first priority. This was a real highlight of my travels and I would highly recommend a visit!

Thank you Julia for all your help and apologies that we could not spend as much time as we would have liked to with you due to our mother's cremation. You are welcome back any time !
Kind regards
Nyoman

I stayed there for about 10 days into end of June. I have really enjoyed working with Wayan and Nyoman through my stay, making a sort of gazebo, digging for a pond (again following my previous WWOOF experience) , seeding and weeding. Nyoman who practically lead us almost everyday made plan in a very considerately and flexibly to come up with new or suitable tasks for the day, which was to change almost everyday due to lasting rainy season.
I ended up staying in the room of a warehouse nearby the farm. Though initially supposed to stay at a tent in a part of the jungle farm and I was a bit disappointed about that, it turned out to be ok as extended rainy season must have been bothering if at a tent. Thank you very much, Wayan and Nyoman.
