Small gourmet and medicinal mushroom farm
Switzerland
1. Describe your project, your place, and its inhabitants (including animals):
Hi, I'm Floyd and I started building from scratch a little indoor Gourmet and Medicinal mushroom farm in 2022. There is quiet a lot to do between growing, building, running the farm and selling at the farmers markets twice a week.
For the moment I do all by myself, actually most of the building work is done, but still growing and improving it.
I built the farm in an old wood sawmill, behind an old big mill area. The area is cool and calm surrounded by vegetation and 3 villages less than 1km in each directions (Pompaples, Orny, La Sarraz).
2. List the activities that WWOOFers will participate in and what you want to teach them:
We will work at the production of mushrooms. Prepare the substrate, seed the substrate and harvest. There are plenty of little things to do around the farm, which is in a nice area for hiking as well.
3. How will you feed and house WWOOFers? Please describe your accommodations and plan for meals:
I'm living in a big 18th century house, belonging to my aunt and her pet "Pepito", 8 kilometers from the farm and there is one free rooms at my stage with a common kitchen and bathroom and a big 1600m2 garden. The house is in a small city called "Orbe". Just at the bottom of the mountain chain called "Jura", next to France. Meals will be sometimes at home, sometimes at the mushroom farm, if you like to breakfast (I don't breakfast) I will prepare one for you at home for sure. I usually go to the farm during afternoon, and do web/admin stuff on computer at home in the morning, except Wednesdays and Saturdays when I have to go early at the farmers market.
4. What could a WWOOFer's day look like at your site (time slot for participation in activities, expectations...)?
The woofer need to be a bit versatile, because every day is different. Sometimes production, sometimes farm improvement, sometimes seeding in the "Lab/white room, sometimes Farmers market (eventually a good opportunity to enjoy Lausanne or Morges cities when I do the market).
You can work half days or 1 full day here and there, this way you can enjoy around full days, I'm quiet flexible.
5. Play the guide! Talk about your own hobbies (music, cooking, etc.) and those possible around (hiking, swimming, etc.): The region is here is for sure really cool for hiking and the Geneva lake is not too far for swimmers. If you like bicycling, you will need some strong legs, but there are tones of areas to visit.
Of course I can share my knowledge about mushrooms and how to grow them, about biology, and many other things, I'm always glade to spread the little I know and learn from my visitors, I've been already an old fellow from "Couchsurfing - Juan Carlos Floyd Sarria". I speak fluently French and English, pretty well Spanish, some Italian, and learned basic Japanese and Chinese. I would love to continue work on these 2 languages.
And of course, if you like cooking mushrooms, you are at the best place ;)
