About us
We are the third generation in our family on this farm, taking over in 2010, but the family moved to this farm in 1932.
We farm with ca 70 cattle, 90 sheep, 100 hens and numerous chicken and few pigs in the summer. We also run a mini mill for wool spinning at the farm, where 3 employees are working in the mill all week days. We are 2 adults (husband and wife) and our 19 year old daughter living at the farm, and on the farm (in other houses) are also two of our other kids living with their families. There is a dog on the farm and a cat.
The farm is located in the south west of Iceland, one hour drive from Reykjavík.
We like to cook good food and enjoy outdoor activities. Mostly that is done around the animals, so when we want to do something different, we take a drive and look at beautiful scenery or visit friends. We sing in the church choir and the lady of the house knits A LOT, where as Tyrfingur is a qualified welder and a mechanic, so making things that are needed is usually done at the farm.
We also do a lot of looking at videos, listening to lectures and read books about regenerative farming and sustainable living.
When we have some students or volunteers in our house, we take them for a sight seeing and tell them about our culture and country, when we can.
Accommodations and plan for meals.
Woofers will have a private room in our house and share bathroom with the family. Internet access is available. He/she will be with us in every meal of the day, which normally are 4.
Our diet consists mostly of products grown or raised on the farm. We eat a lot of meat, eggs, dairy products and vegetables from our own vegetable garden. Unfortunately we cannot cater for particular diets. Bear in mind that we are a meat producing farm that also slaughters animals here on the farm for our own consumption. If you are not comfortable eating the diet described, this farm may not be the best option for you. However, we must point out that our main goal to treat our animals as well as we possibly can, feed them a healthy diet, give them a happy life and then show them the respect to use their products.
Workdays
Notice that we usually have long working hours.
We start working just before 8. No day is exactly the same and depends on seasons and weather. We work with animals in a low stress method and practice grazing management which involves moving poly wire fences every day.
We work in the wool mill every working day, processing wool into yarn.
We raise grass fed chicken on the farm. The chicken is slaughtered on the farm in few batches over the summertime and wwoofers may have to participate in that process, but to the point that they feel comfortable.
Woofers will also participate (seasonally) in making compost, biochar, haymaking, repair or build fences, painting, food processing, cooking, baking, cleaning the housses, planting trees, taking care of the vegetable garden etc accompanied with us and under our instructions. Our days usually end rather late, but we never do much after dinner (at 7 pm). The WWOOFer gets one day a week off.
No special education or experience is needed for the stay as we are willing to educate and teach people our way of living. All experience with farming, animals, carpentry, mechanics, machinery, vegetable production, gardening etc, is useful.
Driving licence is necessary.
