Farm
Senegal
The Burok project is a small polyculture farm created in 2013 in Casamance on 2-3 hectares. Vegetables (onions, aubergines, tomatoes, okra, etc.), trees (lemon, cashew, mango, etc.), sheep and poultry are grown. And at the moment a resource house is being created. It will be a place of training, learning, culture, with a library, an educational garden...
Burok is a project open to all interested villagers, and open to the world, thanks to supporters living abroad and wwoofers received for many years, in the family house. You will be welcomed, housed and fed in exchange for a hand in the garden. And above all, you will have a great time and meet some very nice people, I promise!
Certifications: certification wouldn't have any benefits for us
Current projects: The Burok project started in 2012. Between the germination of an idea and the harvesting of results, a lot of water has flowed under the bridge!
The objectives of food self-sufficiency, reducing the hardship of rural life, diversifying the diet, initiating income-generating activities, developing local potential and contributing to the future of young people have already been largely achieved. However, none of us want to stop there!
Let's take stock:
Phase 1 : vegetable farming
We started the project with vegetables who used to be imported from the north or from abroad, or more often not eaten at all! So we helped people from the area to organize vegetables production.
At the same time, the family house was rebuilt
It now provides accommodation for the family, hosts traditional and family events, and accommodates visitors in good conditions, but also receives foreigners and in particular wwoofers.
Phase 2: breeding
Later on, the construction of a shelter for the animals allowed the development of livestock farming. The aim was to increase the workers' income, but it also provided fertiliser for the market gardening.
Today, the farm produces local and broiler chickens, guinea fowl, ducks and sheep. The animals are sold locally or sent to Dakar, especially for family and religious festivities.
Phase 3: construction of the resource house
In 2022 the resource house was built!
This house is intended to be a place for meetings, training and learning for all. It will include a library, a computer room, a project space for women, a projection room, an educational garden and guest rooms.
The land is fenced and many trees have already been planted. Diversity is the key word, very different from traditional orchards, this garden already has a very large variety of trees.

It’s not easy to put into words everything I experienced at the Burok project. This is not just about cultivating the land, but about growing relationships, values, and visions. Babacar and his family welcomed me like one of their own, and every day was a chance to learn something new — about agroecology, biodiversity, but also the importance of sharing and collaboration.
There’s a beautiful, genuine energy here, where every gesture has meaning. I met incredible people, shared simple yet deep moments, and walked away with a lot of inspiration. It’s an experience that leaves a mark, and I truly recommend it to anyone looking for authenticity, community, and a different vision for the future.
