Our place, situated in the southwestern archipelago of Finland, offer beekeeping, gardening and bed and breakfast accomodation. After renovating the buildings and garden (still going on) and encouraged by friends we started to develop the idea of offering low-priced accomodation to travelers. B & B is only secondary to our main jobs and focuses on summer time when beekeeping also keeps us busy. Being and living in our property centres around the ideology of self-made and/or nearby produced activities and products. We aim to minimize our environmental burden, safeguard our natural garden and take biological biodiversity into account in everyday life as well as to convey these ideas to our guests. In producing food we try to be as self-sufficient as possible. All the necessary renovations are carried out respecting traditional techniques without equipping old buildings with "unnesessary" conveniences. Organic methods: We do not use in any artificial chemicals or pestisides. Instead we use usually horse manure and grass in our vegetable garden. Birds, frogs and small lizards help us with the pests. We circulate all possible materials and use the compost in our garden. Our bee-keeping is more of a hobby, not professional. Current projects: Gardening, picking berries, making food, baking. Forestry, repairing furniture, building. Beekeeping and centrifuging the honey in late summer. Also cleaning beekeeping equipments and preparing the garden for the winter. Internet access available, own room for the woofers as well.

We spent a wonderful week at Hembacka. Leena and Risto are such lovely people who welcomed us with such kindness into their lives. Hembacka is a gloriously calm, peaceful and beautiful place which they tend to with great knowledge. We were able to work with the bees and the honey production which was really interesting as well as various tasks in the garden. Leena and Risto are fantastic hosts, thank you for letting us stay!

It was wonderful to volunteer at Hembacka with Leena and Risto! They're kind, hospitable, and made me feel very much at home in their beautiful little corner of the world. I walked their adorable dog Eenari every morning, which allowed me to become familiar with the surrounding forests and fields; helped paint their terrace; heated up their sauna a few evenings; gathered berries and vegetables from their garden to be used in a variety of dishes; and even got to help with cooking and decorating (with wildflowers and mint leaves) for a family reunion they hosted! I particularly enjoyed foraging wild berries and fresh stinging nettle with Leena, and she made delicious nettle waffles with part of our batch. One evening, she and Risto even took me to a local bog to pick cloudberries! Risto has a great sense of humor, and it was also fun to go with him to a couple of their beehives to check on the queens. This is such a delightful place tended to with love by a very lovely, generous, down-to-earth couple with a beautiful family, a reverence for nature, and a knack for baking scrumptious bread and making sweet currant juice. It's fantastic to see that their grandkids are also helping with and learning some of the work when they come visit as well. I will fondly remember Hembacka and Leena and Risto's kindness and company!

I spent three weeks at Hembacka, where I received a very warm welcome from Leena and Risto. They made me feel like a member of the family right from the start, which enabled me to experience their culture and way of life much more fully than on previous placements. Hembacka is a wonderful place full of life, set amidst breathtaking natural surroundings. Leena and Risto are kind-hearted, curious and helpful people who were always there when I had questions, but also gave me the freedom to try things out for myself. My main tasks involved mowing the grass with various pieces of equipment and helping with the beekeeping on the farm. From the outset, I was able to choose which areas I wanted to work in and how I wanted to apply my knowledge and skills. Working around the bees was particularly pleasant. Despite my English leaving room for improvement, Leena and Risto were always patient in explaining things and took my needs into account. Every day, Leena also made the most delicious meals. In my spare time, I explored Turku and a nature reserve, went for a swim, and met some WWOOFers from a neighbouring farm. I highly recommend Hembacka and would like to thank Leena and Risto for their wonderful hospitality.

I got to spend three weeks of early Summer at the beautiful Hembacka, working mostly in the garden. There was always a suitable amount of things to do for each day of work, with time to chill after lunch and dinner. Leena and Risto are two hardworking, relaxed and friendly people, and I always felt I could be myself around them. They accommodated my needs as a neurodivergent and vegan, helpfully shared a bit of their knowledge and helped me explore the Kimito island on my freetime. Einari the dog was happy to show around the neighbourhood too, on our walks! At Hembacka I got to learn about gardening, beekeeping and housekeeping in a lively environment. I truly enjoyed my stay and am so grateful for the experience!

I had a great stay at Hembacka! Leena and Risto were so generous and open. I enjoyed working in the garden, haying, cooking, walking with Einari the faithful dog, and most of all, the time with the bees! Leena and Risto were patient hosts who both did lots of teaching and imparting of knowledge, while also allowing me to try things out myself and share knowledge and skills that I had coming in. Accommodations were very comfortable. Hembacka is a beautiful property and home, and I used my free time borrowing a bike and exploring the local area, enjoying the sauna, and relaxing in the home. Friends and family came around often which was really nice for me as a solo WWOOFer looking to chat with others. I would definitely recommend WWOOFing with Leena and Risto!

I am happy to have had the opportunity to stay about two weeks in October at Hembacka, which is a quiet and peaceful place. My tasks were very various like: helping with preparing the garden, the house, the beehives and the “honey room” for winter, preparing garden beds, baking and cooking, cleaning windows, heating the sauna. Leena´s way of gardening, baking and cooking was especially inspiring to me and Risto´s sense of humour (and by the time also his special ginger shot) could turn rainy days into sunny ones. Their dogs´ company was just pleasant even though I came to this place as a decided “cat person”! There weren´t tight working hours, the weather and light hours were giving the lines for outdoor work. There was enough time too to explore the surroundings a bit by bike or on foot. I was introduced also to Leena´s and Risto´s family and some friends and they showed me a bit around or linked me with people from my areas of interest, which I appreciated a lot. Leena and Risto supported me also in a very generous manner to organise my three months lasting stay in Finland Thank you for everything!
