CASA JUANITA
Hello and Welcome!
It is a small family farm, located in the town of San José de Porcón, 163.2 km from the city of Trujillo; it takes 4 hours by private car to reach the farmLandscape
San José de Porcón is a beautiful populated center with geographic characteristics very similar to those of an inter-Andean valley. It has ecological levels of Quechua and Jalca (3100-4000 masl), and is surrounded by majestic mountains, one of the most important of which is Cerro Icchal. The landscape is composed of extensive green fields of grass and eucalyptus forests, a blue sky during the day and starry at night, mountains with springs of pure and clean water, winds that carry clean and fresh air, and a magnificent panoramic view of the Andean relief.
Archaeological importance
San José de Porcón is a privileged place historically, because in 1998 the archaeologist Jhon Topic and his wife discovered ruins of what was a ceremonial center, very close to the slopes of the Icchal hill, famous for having been an apu of religious importance and worship of Catequil, god of lightning and oracle for the ancient cultures of this place, as were the wamachukos, cajamarcas and conchucos, that is why even today it is very easy to observe some archaeological remains such as monoliths, pieces of pottery, carved rocks, among others.
The farm
Granja Casa Juanita, is named in honor of our maternal grandmother Juana Salazar Jimenez, an exemplary woman ahead of her time who lived and raised her children based on the production of her farm. Our mother Carolina Aguirre Salazar inherited her virtues and teachings and she in turn passed on to us her love for nature, her neighbor and work, that is why in gratitude to such a beautiful tradition we decided to continue with the work that our beloved and remembered grandmother started.
Our small farm has a surface of 3 hectares, it is a modest place with two cabins, it has the basic services to be able to live, such as electricity and drinking water, there is internet and cell phone signal. There is a common bedroom with single beds and a common bathroom with hot water.
The lifestyle is naturally rural and is based on basic domestic and agricultural tasks, which start very early in the morning and end in the afternoon. The production capacity is small, but sufficient for subsistence, through self-consumption and trade among neighbors in nearby areas.
Farm chores
Basically they consist of field work (fallow land, sowing, cultivation and harvesting of potatoes and grains such as corn, barley and flax), domestic chores (mowing pastures, feeding chickens and cows, food preparation, preserving and salting meat, grain storage, growing vegetables in the garden, etc.) and maintenance work (cleaning ditches, cutting bushes, repairing the roof of the cabins, etc.). It is possible to help neighbors who are engaged in small-scale production of fresh cheese, milk, eggs and whole wheat bread, small-scale production of sheep wool, handmade fabrics and clothing, among others.
Agro-ecological techniques
We carry out crop rotation.
Other activities
In our farm not everything is work, there is also space for adventure, tourism, fun and social support. The landscape of San Jose is conducive to adventure sports such as trekking, climbing and others. You can visit other nearby towns and enjoy their tourist attractions such as: the main square of Santiago de Chuco (house museum of the universal poet Cesar Vallejo), the hot springs of Cachicadán, among others.
Teaching Experience
In addition, you will be able to help by teaching English and environmental issues to children and young people in the area. Most of them study during the day and help their families in the afternoon with domestic and farming activities, such as herding sheep, milking cows, etc.
Food
There are three meals a day, cooked with gas or firewood. Breakfast is usually varied, it can have coffee, eggs, cheese, toasted corn, bread, milk, oatmeal or a flour soup. Lunch is usually grain soup or a main dish with salad, this can be vegetarian or not, sometimes it is necessary to sacrifice some poultry or guinea pigs, or other animals to eat. For dinner we usually eat little, we have chocolate, milk with bread and cheese, or it can be a vegetable soup.
We hope you visit us soon. Bye!
