Hi & thanks for looking at our profile! We are in a three-hectare homestead in the countryside of Finland. It's a permaculture garden and education centre in the making. We have some forest, lots of berry bushes and fruit trees, a traditional no-till vegetable garden and an old house and other buildings, and always lots of projects to work on! Beyond Buckthorns is a small place, so we currently only offer stays of no longer than maximum two weeks at a time. We can host one wwoofer, or a two if you are willing to share a room. We, Lumia and Dominik, are a finnish-german married couple, no kids, one cat. We live in a rural area, no neighbours in sight here, so you really get to enjoy peace and quiet, sauna, nature... welcome! Organic methods: We are a home-sized farm/homestead, not certified in any way. We do not use any pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilisers on our premises. We are a permaculture paradise in the making and also have a rather large organic, no-till annual vegetable garden where we mulch and crop rotate. Certifications: We are a home-size farm without commercial production, so not certified in any way. Education: we run courses at our place on topics like permaculture and biogas. Current projects: We need help with all kinds of projects depending on the time of year you visit us, such as - planting and sowing - weeding - working on a food forest - transplanting trees - harvesting herbs, vegetables and berries - maintaining our old farm buildings - cleaning up the old farm buildings - building new raised beds - conserving produce - helping with the courses (prep and during) - helping in the house - and so on. Preferred hosting time: from one day to about two weeks. Internet access is available. Accommodation: you will be sleeping in one of the outdoor buildings we also double as a classroom during rainy weather. It's dry, private but is very simple and does not have heating or water toilet (composting toilet about 10 metres away), showering is done in the sauna building. There's a water cooker, coffeemaker and a fridge for you to use onsite, but main meals we'll eat and prep together in the main kitchen. You can also bring your own tent or stay in our Tentsile tree tent, or come with your own campervan/RV! Welcome!

Everything at Lumia and Dominik’s home was wonderful. It was such a great experience, with many interesting conversations and fun and interesting things to do. We prepared food, helped in the gardens, got to meet several people and see some of the town. There was clear communication about plans for the day, which made the work feel more peaceful. Lumia and Dominik also made sure we had plenty of time to rest, drink water, etc. The conversations, the lovely meals together, and the hands on work all helped us to learn a lot about both permaculture and Finnish culture (as well as many other things) in a short amount of time. The summer house where we slept was very cozy, and the place comes with the friendliest cat in the world. Lumia and Dominik made us feel comfortable and at home. We miss Beyond Buckthorns already and would recommend it to anyone.

My week at Beyond Buckthorns was beautiful to say the least. Lumia and Nick welcomed me with open arms. The pace at Beyond Buckthorns is very relaxed, though the work is intensive at times. I left Beyond Buckthorns with lots of new skills and information -- including how to use a scythe, make biochar, and what applications of agroforestry and no till gardening can look like. There was plenty of time during the day to absorb the peace of the environment, write and read, and spend time with Sophie (truly the sweetest cat I've ever met). Both Lumia and Nick would readily chat with me about permaculture theory and design, their own journey of establishing Beyond Buckthorns, and would consistently check in with me to make sure I was happy and comfortable. As Lumia expressed, WWOOFing at Beyond Buckthorns is based in cultural exchange. Every meal, farm task, and conversation felt like a fulfillment of this. I ate so many delicious meals but will remember most fondly the rhubarb juice, pancakes, and the various preserves and pickles. I left Beyond Buckthorns with an expanded knowledge of homesteading, the pace of rural living, the importance of gardening, and a renewed sense of peace. Thank you endlessly for such a wonderful stay!

This was my first WWOOFing experience and I had an absolutely amazing time at Beyond Buckthorns. Lumia and Dominik are very kind and welcoming hosts. I thoroughly enjoyed all the moments shared together, especially talk at meal time about Finnish culture, permaculture, and many other interesting topics. My tasks were mainly to help out with their weekend Permaculture course including cleaning and organising the rooms, preparing and serving lunch and snacks, and making sure the coffee is not running out! I enjoyed baking Finnish berry pie and making Finnish pea soup! I would definitely recommend visiting Byond Buckthorns especially if you have interests in permaculture. Kiitos Lumia and Dominik for everything!

It was a very nice experience. Hosts Lumia and Dominik were very kind and relaxed. It was very interesting to grow a garden and plant trees. It has given me a chance to think a lot about agriculture this time. Thank you very much!

I am super happy with the week I spent here! Lumia and Dominick welcomed me very openly into their home and their every day life. They always made sure I had everything I needed and that I was feeling good :) During my stay we focused on harvesting, weeding and preserving foods from the garden. Also we took some mushrooms from the forest and started preparing for winter a little bit. Everyday was a little different and I learnt a lot in this week! Lastly I appreciated getting enough time to rest. I can only recommend this beautiful place!

My week at Lumia and Nick's farm passed very quickly and smoothly. Lumia is a very attentive and helpful person. We worked together almost every day. The working time was around 4 and a half hours in average, not physically demanding at all. There were mainly berry and mushroom picking in the farm/forest, planting and harvesting in the garden and other smaller works around the house. I learned a lot of new things at the 2-day permaculture design workshop held by Nick, they have a lot of theoretical and practical knowledge in this field. The whole little farm is a small "jewel box", very well kept. I will miss the conversations during (vegetarian) meals about movies, culture, future, and the morning yogurt bowls with fresh berries and cereal :) Thank you again for everything!
