I enjoy meeting people from around the world and sharing enriching experiences. I'm happy to assist you during your stay and even beforehand. I lead registered community-based organizations aimed at alleviating the suffering/the disadvantaged, fostering societal development, and restoring hope to the less fortunate in the community. Our work focuses on providing access to basic quality education, community healthcare, community food security, and environmental initiatives. We strive to empower women, youths, and local households for sustainable economic development and self-reliance. In my home, we are over twenty people, including my wives, sons, daughters, grandchildren, and workers. My family and I are committed to offering high hospitality and integrity to all volunteers, we adjust plans to meet volunteers needs. LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES Volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in various farming activities. Learn about local languages (Suba, Luo, and Swahili)) and experience the Suba and Luo cultures, including our ways of living, food preparation, eating, and governance. MEALS We typically serve meals prepared from our own farm produce, including ugali, cassava, porridge, kales, cowpeas, and potatoes. For items we do not grow, such as wheat flour, fish, chicken, meat, spaghetti, bread, chapati, mandazi, sugar, tea leaves, and cooking oil, we source them fresh from the local market. If you have any dietary preferences or restrictions, we will gladly consult with you and organize meals that cater to everyone’s needs. ACCOMMODATION Volunteers, travelers, and tourists will enjoy comfortable private rooms designed with locally inspired décor that seamlessly blends modern amenities with traditional hospitality. Each day begins with the soothing sounds of nature and stunning, scenic views right outside your window. COMMUNITY PROJECTS 1. Organic and Permaculture Farming We Empower local farmers by organizing the access to gardening equipment, tools, water pumps, and fencing materials. Support poultry farming and micro-finance initiatives for farmers and fishermen. 2. Environmental Initiatives Combat deforestation and promote sustainable agriculture. Sponsor seminars, workshops, and training sessions, and provide seeds and seedlings for reforestation efforts. 3. Education in local institutions Improve school infrastructure, sponsor vulnerable children, support girl-child education, and plan to establish feeding programs in schools. 4. Community Healthcare Operate a charity-run clinic to improve access to health services and donate food, shelter, and clothes to disadvantaged families. 5. Women and Youth Empowerment We are committed to empowering women and youth through practical, sustainable, and income-generating skills. Our initiative provides vertical smart-garden equipment to support modern, space-efficient farming. We also offer hands-on training in local soap production, reusable sanitary towel making, and other garment-related skills in our women tailoring workshop. Additionally, we help organize small groups and connect them to revolving funds, enabling members to start and grow their own small businesses. Through these opportunities, we aim to foster economic development, strengthen financial independence, and promote long-term self-reliance among women and youth in our community. 6. Community Water Project Pump, treat, and provide clean drinking water to the community, serving a significant portion of the population with plans for expansion. OUR IMPACT Our empowerment programmes are already creating measurable and meaningful change within the community: Our community health centre provides high-quality healthcare services to all community members. We prioritize education by creating welcoming, engaging, and enjoyable learning environments for children and youth. We supply clean and filtered water to homes and villages, promoting better health and reducing waterborne diseases. ARRIVAL INFORMATION. As Samuel would say, “Feel free and most welcome”. To begin our trip, the logistics of travelling to this remote area were very well organized, and communicating with Samuel was very easy. As soon as we arrived, we felt welcomed by his whole family. They are all wonderful people who treated us with great kindness throughout our three-week stay. Furthermore, we felt appreciated by all the islanders we greeted - they are extremely friendly! We had a lovely time exploring this beautiful, rural island and felt completely safe to wander. Samuel’s deep commitment to his community projects were inspiring. During our stay, we witnessed first-hand the impacts of the women’s sewing programme, the clinic, and the community water project. There was not necessarily consistent work for us during our stay, but Samuel and the family asked for help when needed and welcomed any initiative we wanted to take (gardening, kitchen work, office work, painting, fundraising and spreading the word). Do take advantage of Otis’ tours of Mfangano; he was an energetic and knowledgeable guide for us. We spent much of our free time going on walks, swimming in the lake, reading, taking day trips, and playing with the children at the residence. Samuel and his family are truly what made this trip unforgettable for us. We learned so much during our stay and also laughed a lot. It was hard to leave the people with whom we connected so deeply in just three weeks. The family remains in our hearts.

Samuel Odoyo is an Exceptional Host on Mfangano Island, Kenya I had the pleasure of staying with Samuel Odoyo on Mfangano Island, and I can wholeheartedly say he is an exemplary host truly one of a kind. His warm hospitality, deep cultural knowledge, and tireless dedication to his community make him a standout figure not only on the island but in the wider Lake Victoria region. From the moment I arrived, Samuel made me feel completely at home. His home is serene, secure, and surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty. He goes above and beyond to ensure guests are comfortable and deeply immersed in the local experience. Samuel doesn’t just host he connects you to the very soul of Mfangano through his storytelling, community initiatives, and cultural insight. What makes the experience even more special is his wonderful family. His son, Godwins, is a genius tour guide  knowledgeable beyond his years and passionate about sharing the hidden gems and legends of the island. He is not only a brilliant guide but also a truly lovely young man whose charm and intelligence leave a lasting impression. Samuel’s wife, Meroline, is incredibly friendly and quietly welcoming. Her warmth radiates through her gentle demeanor and attentive care, making the household feel like a true sanctuary. Beyond hosting, Samuel is actively involved in sustainable community development supporting education, organic farming, environmental conservation, and access to clean water.

Samuel Odoyo has been a gracious host to many people since 2016, as evidenced by the numerous heartfelt messages in his visitors' books and the glowing reviews on various volunteer platforms. His generosity and warmth have earned him friends from all over the world, making his home a meeting point for diverse cultures and experiences. Beyond his hospitality, Samuel is deeply committed to community development. He actively supports several projects that have significantly improved life on the island, contributing to its growth and sustainability. His dedication to the well-being of others is truly admirable, and his efforts have left a lasting impact on the local community. One of the most remarkable things about Samuel is his unmatched hospitality. Despite being a polygamist with a large family, he welcomes every guest with open arms, treating them like part of his household. His children, raised with discipline and a strong sense of community, love to socialize with visitors, making everyone feel instantly at home. Mealtimes at Samuel’s home are an experience of their own. Sitting around the large family dining table, I had the pleasure of indulging in a variety of African dishes, each bursting with rich flavors and prepared with love. The food was always in abundance, and every time I was encouraged to eat more, I found myself laughing and saying “Ayieng!”—the local way of expressing that I was full. Being at Samuel’s home is more than just a visit; it is an experience
