ABOUT ME
My name is Samuel, a 59-year-old teacher living on Mfangano Island. I enjoy meeting people from around the world and sharing enriching experiences. I'm happy to assist you during your stay and even beforehand.
I lead registered community-based organizations aimed at alleviating the suffering/the disadvantaged, fostering societal development, and restoring hope to the less fortunate in the community. Our work focuses on providing access to basic quality education, community healthcare, community food security, and environmental initiatives. We strive to empower women, youths, and local households for sustainable economic development and self-reliance.
In my home, we are over twenty people, including my wives, sons, daughters, grandchildren, and workers. My family and I are committed to offering high hospitality and integrity to all volunteers, we adjust plans to meet volunteers needs.
LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
Volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in various farming activities. Learn about local languages (Suba, Luo, and Swahili)) and experience the Suba and Luo cultures, including our ways of living, food preparation, eating, and governance.
MEALS
We typically serve meals prepared from our own farm produce, including ugali, cassava, porridge, kales, cowpeas, and potatoes. For items we do not grow, such as wheat flour, fish, chicken, meat, spaghetti, bread, chapati, mandazi, sugar, tea leaves, and cooking oil, we source them fresh from the local market. If you have any dietary preferences or restrictions, we will gladly consult with you and organize meals that cater to everyone’s needs.
ACCOMMODATION
Volunteers, travelers, and tourists will enjoy comfortable private rooms designed with locally inspired décor that seamlessly blends modern amenities with traditional hospitality. Each day begins with the soothing sounds of nature and stunning, scenic views right outside your window.
COMMUNITY PROJECTS
1. Organic and Permaculture Farming
We Empower local farmers by organizing the access to gardening equipment, tools, water pumps, and fencing materials. Support poultry farming and micro-finance initiatives for farmers and fishermen.
2. Environmental Initiatives
Combat deforestation and promote sustainable agriculture. Sponsor seminars, workshops, and training sessions, and provide seeds and seedlings for reforestation efforts.
3. Education in local institutions
Improve school infrastructure, sponsor vulnerable children, support girl-child education, and plan to establish feeding programs in schools.
4. Community Healthcare
Operate a charity-run clinic to improve access to health services and donate food, shelter, and clothes to disadvantaged families.
5. Women and Youth Empowerment
We are committed to empowering women and youth through practical, sustainable, and income-generating skills. Our initiative provides vertical smart-garden equipment to support modern, space-efficient farming. We also offer hands-on training in local soap production, reusable sanitary towel making, and other garment-related skills in our women tailoring workshop.
Additionally, we help organize small groups and connect them to revolving funds, enabling members to start and grow their own small businesses. Through these opportunities, we aim to foster economic development, strengthen financial independence, and promote long-term self-reliance among women and youth in our community.
6. Community Water Project
Pump, treat, and provide clean drinking water to the community, serving a significant portion of the population with plans for expansion.
OUR IMPACT
