📍 About Us: A Vision Rooted in Soil and Hope
I am Paul Odiwuor Ogola, a passionate permaculture teacher and designer from Kawiya village, a remote community nestled in the northern part of Korayo Sub-location, Kochia Central, Rangwe District, Homa Bay County – Kenya. Our village, located within the Lake Victoria ecosystem, spans 10 square kilometers and is home to approximately 1,800 people. It is a humble yet vibrant community with one public school, three private schools, and 15 churches.
Our people rely primarily on subsistence farming, carpentry, blacksmithing, tailoring, and small-scale businesses. However, we face serious challenges – climate change, environmental degradation, limited resources, and isolation from key development networks.
That’s where permaculture steps in – not only as a solution but as a lifestyle that re-establishes our connection with nature and each other.
🌱 Our Mission
Our mission is to bring permaculture knowledge and regenerative farming technologies to our rural communities – to empower young and adult people to lift themselves out of extreme poverty through sustainable farming, community resilience, and environmental stewardship.
We envision a future where anyone willing to work and learn can provide for themselves and their families through practical skills, innovation, and shared values. Our focus is on open-source, decentralized permaculture education, rooted in the ethics of Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Share.
🛠️ Our Core Programs & Current Projects
We are actively developing and upgrading the following programs:
🌾 Permaculture & Organic Farming Trainings
🌿 School Children Permaculture Education
🏡 Home Gardening & Horticultural Farming
🌱 General Farming & Local Food Systems
🌞 Greenhouse Demonstration & Training Site
👩🏽🏫 Farmer-to-Farmer Field Learning Workshops
Each of these initiatives is designed to increase food security, regenerate our soil, inspire youth, and preserve indigenous ecological knowledge – all while promoting sustainable rural livelihoods.
🤝 Volunteering Opportunities: Be the Change With Us
We warmly welcome volunteers from all over the world to join our journey of ecological regeneration and community empowerment.
Our volunteer program is more than work – it’s a heartfelt exchange of knowledge, culture, and purpose. As a volunteer, you’ll:
Work side-by-side with local families in farms and gardens
Help us improve our training programs and materials
Support our greenhouse and permaculture school projects
Teach new skills or help us document and network our work globally
You’ll also have the unique opportunity to live with a local host family – sharing meals, stories, laughs, challenges, and dreams.
🏠 Accommodation & Local Experience
You’ll stay in a home-based care setting with one of our warm and welcoming host families. We provide:
Safe, private sleeping quarters
Comfortable bedding (bed, blankets, sheets, mosquito nets)
Nutritious local meals (vegetarian options available)
Clean drinking water (boiled), solar electricity, and internet access
Kenya’s tropical climate offers an abundance of seasonal fruits—bananas, papayas, mangoes, jackfruit, pineapples, and oranges—that you’ll enjoy throughout your stay.
Please let us know in advance if you have any special dietary or medical requirements so we can plan accordingly.
We recommend bringing your personal essentials, including:
Soap, toothpaste, first aid supplies, gloves, sturdy shoes, a hat, and durable work clothes.
🤲 Our Values & Commitment
We are committed to:
Dignity and Respect for every person, regardless of background.
Integrity and Accountability in all our actions.
Openness and Honesty in our communication.
Shared Leadership and Participatory Decisions to empower the whole community.
Sustainable Education – accessible, practical, and deeply rooted in local culture and wisdom.
🌍 Let’s Network and Grow Together
We are seeking volunteers, partners, donors, and friends who can:
Share expertise or materials
Help us network globally
Support our vision through crowdfunding, technical advice, or resource donations
Spread the message of regenerative living and empower others to act
Your helping hand, no matter how small, can plant seeds of hope that grow into forests of change.
